In what turned out to be another fun-filled long weekend on Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks, the 2018 Lake Race on Saturday provided plenty of action-packed racing between the 30-plus teams competing in the Offshore Powerboat Association-sanctioned event.

In the five-team Super Cat class race, which was the first race of the newly formed Supercat Racing 750 Owners Group, Performance Boat Center/Jimmy John’s exacted revenge on the WHM Motorsports team that came from New York to Performance Boat Center/Jimmy John’s hometown race last year and won. This year, Performance Boat Center/Jimmy John’s Myrick Coil and John Tomlinson edged out WHM Motorsports’ Billy Mauff and Jay Muller following a two-heat battle that saw each team win one race. In the end, the Performance Boat Center/Jimmy John’s team finished with an overall better time to take the top spot on the podium.

Monday, June 4th – WHM Motorsports Offshore Racing issued this statement on Facebook:

WHM Motorsports would like to give special thanks to Mike Sheppard and everyone at OPA Racing for putting on a great event for the season opener of Super Cat Racing. It is going to be an exciting year of racing.

Unfortunately, during milling the smell of smoke began filling the cockpit of the boat and ultimately Jay realized that it was the trim pump and it was stuck and this issue persisted during the course of the first race making the boat difficult to handle and scrubbing speed. This allowed Performance Boat Center to take the lead from start to finish essentially unchallenged. Although, not without a great struggle, WHM Motorsports managed after starting at the back to take 2nd in the first heat of the race.

Clearly disappointed because not only did the team know we had the right set up for the race, but unfortunately due to weather the teams were not able to test on Saturday morning as planned before the start of the races. Had we been able to test prior to the start of the race, the issue would have been discovered and things during the first race may have been dramatically different as was the case during the 2nd race where the results were exact the reverse of the first race – WHM Motorsports with the 1st and Performance Boat Center with the 2nd, leaving the overall 1st place to the team with the best time.

Congratulations Performance Boat Center for your 1st place win. Let our rivalry on the race course begin! See you all in Sarasota!
